Approximately 65 percent of India's reservoirs are drying up, according to a Central Water Commission assessment. GIS has played an important role in enabling government efforts to improve water conditions in India.
GIS has become widely used by the National Mission for Clean Ganga and Interlinking of Rivers. Water-focused organisations like the Central Groundwater Board and Central Water Commission, and all other mission-based programmes of government run based on GIS. Many water utilities have used GIS to manage and maintain their water distribution networks, reducing leakages as well as non-revenue water.
